A cashmere scarf is a true treasure—warm, feather-light, and effortlessly chic. With proper care, the precious fibre from the Changpa goat can last a lifetime, growing even softer over time. Here's how to keep your scarf luxuriously soft, beautiful, and ready to wear for years to come.
While spot-cleaning can address minor stains, a scarf that's been stored or worn regularly needs a full, gentle clean. Dirt, oils, or even tiny food particles can attract moths, so don't skip a proper wash when it's due.
Hand Washing (Recommended)
Hand washing is the safest method to preserve cashmere's delicate fibres.
Choose a gentle cleanser. Use a dedicated cashmere shampoo or a mild detergent for wools. In a pinch, a delicate hair conditioner can also work to maintain softness.
Prepare lukewarm water. Fill a basin with lukewarm water—never hot, as extreme heat can shrink or misshape the fibres.
Dissolve the cleanser. Mix the shampoo or detergent into the water until fully dissolved.
Soak the scarf. Submerge the scarf and let it soak for about 30 minutes to lift dirt and oils.
Rinse thoroughly. Gently squeeze out the soapy water (avoid wringing). Rinse under cool running water or in a clean basin until the water runs clear.
Remove excess water. Press the scarf between your palms or roll it in a towel to absorb moisture—again, no twisting or harsh handling.
Machine Washing (If Necessary)
If you must machine wash, take these precautions:
Use a mesh laundry bag for protection.
Select the delicate or hand-wash cycle with cold water and low spin.
Use a small amount of mild detergent or wool shampoo.
Remove immediately after the cycle and reshape gently.
Proper drying is key to keeping your scarf's shape and texture.
Lay it flat. After rolling the scarf in a clean towel to remove excess water, lay it flat on a dry towel or drying rack.
Reshape gently. Smooth it out to its original dimensions.
Air dry naturally. Keep it away from direct heat, sunlight, radiators, and never use a tumble dryer. Allow it to air dry completely—this may take a day or two.
Never hang wet cashmere. The weight of the water can stretch it out of shape.
Good storage protects your scarf from moths, dust, and damage.
Clean your storage space. Ensure shelves or drawers are clean, dry, and dust-free.
Use moth prevention. Place cedar blocks, lavender sachets, or anti-moth papers in the storage area. Refresh these periodically.
Avoid plastic & cardboard. Do not store long-term in plastic bags (which can trap moisture) or cardboard boxes (which may contain acids that harm fibres).
Wrap in tissue. For extra care, wrap your scarf in acid-free tissue paper before placing it in a drawer or shelf.
Give it space. Avoid cramming it tightly among other items.
If moths appear:
Place the scarf in a sealed plastic bag and freeze it for 24–48 hours to kill any larvae. Afterwards, let it return to room temperature and brush gently.
Some pilling is natural, especially in areas of friction like around the neck or where a bag rubs. It doesn't mean poor quality—it's part of wearing natural fibres.
Wash gently to remove loose fibres before they form pills.
Use a cashmere comb or fabric shaver lightly over the surface when pills appear.
Rotate your scarf. Avoid wearing the same cashmere scarf daily to reduce friction.
Be mindful of accessories. Try not to wear it with rough-textured clothing, sharp jewellery, or abrasive bag straps.
Cashmere is durable yet delicate. To keep it looking its best:
Rotate your pieces. If you live in a cold climate and wear cashmere often, consider having a few scarves to alternate.
Let it rest. After wearing, allow your scarf to air out before storing.
Handle with clean hands. Oils and lotions can transfer to the fibres over time.
Taking good care of your cashmere isn't just about maintenance—it's about honoring a special material:
Preserves softness and loft. Gentle cleaning maintains that heavenly touch.
Retains shape and drape. Proper washing and drying keep it looking elegant.
Extends its life. Well-cared-for cashmere can last decades.
Reduces waste. Longer-lasting pieces mean less frequent replacement, supporting a more sustainable approach to fashion.
Treat your cashmere scarf with a little patience and attention, and it will repay you with enduring comfort, style, and warmth season after season.
